Course
management systems also known as virtual learning environment are software
systems designed to assist in the management of education courses for students,
especially by helping teachers and learners with course administration. In
other words, a CMS is a set of tools that enables the instructor to create
online course content and post it on the web without having to handle HTML or
other programming languages. Course management system has become an integral
part of the higher education system. They make teaching and course management
easier by providing a framework and set of tools for instructors. It could
include learning objects, class exercises, quizzes, assignments, tests etc. The
major advantages of CMS includes it provides conventional course experiences,
it is used to organize a course experience, unit- module- topic approach to
course organization is an example of course organization that fits nicely into
CMS’s. There are two categories of CMS’s-
proprietary and Open source.
Learning
Management system is a software
application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and
delivery of electronic educational technology or e- learning courses or training
programmes. In other words LMS is a broad term used to describe software tools
designed to manage user learning interventions and provide access to online
learning services for students, teachers and administrators. Learning management systems range from
systems for managing training and educational records to software for
distributing online or blended courses over the internet with features for
online collaboration school districts and schools use LMS’s to deliver online
courses and augment on- campus courses.
